Patrick Lane - a digital guide
About

Why this exists

The research behind attachment theory is some of the most important work in modern psychology - decades of evidence on how the patterns we learn as children go on to shape every relationship we have as adults. Most people who could benefit from it never encounter it in a form they can actually use. This page explains what this project is built on, and exactly what it is not.

The knowledge this is built on

The frameworks draw primarily on the foundational work of John Bowlby and Mary Ainsworth in attachment theory; Aaron Beck and Albert Ellis in cognitive behavioural therapy; and Jeffrey Young's schema therapy model. These are not fringe ideas. They are among the most rigorously studied frameworks in clinical psychology, with decades of evidence behind them.

The “Why This Keeps Happening” test is based on established psychometric tools - particularly the work of Bartholomew and Horowitz, and the Adult Attachment Interview research lineage. The prompts in the 21-day journal draw on accepted CBT and schema-focused techniques. The book synthesises attachment and schema concepts in a way that has been grounded consistently in the literature.

None of this is a substitute for clinical care. If you are in crisis, or if your symptoms are significantly affecting your functioning, please seek a qualified therapist. What this project offers is education, reflection, and structured self-inquiry - not diagnosis, not treatment.

Why it was built this way

The gap between the people who need this knowledge and the people who can access professional support is enormous. Therapy is expensive. Waitlists are long. Stigma is real.

Patrick Lane was built to close a small part of that gap - not to replace therapy, and not to deceive anyone. To translate research that matters into something reachable, honestly, so the people using it know exactly what they are holding.

If that resonates with you, everything you need is here.

In plain terms

Patrick Lane is an AI-crafted persona, not a person

There is no person named Patrick Lane. The name, the voice, and the image you see elsewhere on this site are a deliberately designed persona - not a therapist, not a real author, and not a stand-in for one. Every idea shared through this persona is drawn from real, peer-reviewed research in attachment theory, CBT, and schema therapy. The persona exists for one reason: knowledge presented as a textbook is rarely absorbed, while knowledge presented as a conversation reaches differently. That is a deliberate design choice, made openly.

This page exists so you always know exactly who - and what - is speaking to you. Patrick Lane is a digital guide, not a licensed therapist, and was never built to be one. If you are in crisis, or need more than a book and a journal can give you, please talk to a real, qualified professional. That is not a disclaimer buried in fine print. It is the first rule this project was built around.
